On trust

Warning: this entry is a rant.

Oops, I did it again. I again wrestled with an editorial of a publisher, thrown away some precious weekends and my written article about some technology.

This time it was because I couldn't accept the modification the editor has made into "my article". Well, that was not true, or so was I told. The article was supposed to be co-written by an author (me) and an editor. I know the publisher's policy of writing articles stated that editors will make some change on articles submitted for it to be easy and consistent reading. Well, I thought I have been known as an author and conference speaker who tells audiences complex technology stuff rather easier to understand. But I was not considered so this time.

For example, every time my article jump onto the next topic like "remove hardcoded url to enable users to tell it afterwards", the editor added the phrases like, "OK, well done so far! Let's move on to the next part, buddies! How about making it configurable field so that users can tell it afterwards? Isn't it fun? Sure it is!". WTF. Every reader should know we move on to the next topic without explicitly telling we do. Readers aren't kindergarten kids. Readers are professionals in their area and actively want to know the new stuff. They don't need hands. They need code. Yeah, now I understand the publishing is for those who, and I understand that was my mistake to take the job.

The most offending phrase I received is that it was supposed to be "co-writing". I never heard the fact the editing is actually co-writing. I may be too lucky never to face the fact before. Anyway, I don't want to co-write with someone I have never met in the context, have never built trust relationship each other, and most of all, nerver have respects with each other. I write articles signed with my name, gambling with my own career and honesty. If I wrote a bad, stupid, and unhelpful article and published it with my name, my career in writing would be over. That is why I don't want to write about what I don't really excite about and you knew that beforehands, because we have already argued about the topic of the article.

No, no thank you, don't want to co-write with you no more.
